What is Individual Therapy at True North Psychotherapy?
Individual therapy is private, one-on-one work with a therapist, built around your specific goals and challenges. At True North Psychotherapy, individual sessions draw on evidence-based approaches rather than general talk therapy — including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD and anxiety, and EMDR therapy for trauma, applied as appropriate to what you’re working through.
Who Individual Therapy is For
People come to individual therapy for all kinds of reasons: anxiety, OCD, trauma, PTSD, depression, emotional dysregulation, life transitions, relationship challenges, grief, burnout, or simply wanting support navigating a hard stretch. We work with youth, adults, and families, and we’re an LGBTQ+ affirming practice — every client is met where they are.
How it Works
Sessions run 50 minutes, in-person at our Guelph offices or virtually anywhere in Ontario. Your first sessions are about understanding your history and goals; from there, your therapist builds a plan suited to you — sometimes that means Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for managing intense emotions, ERP therapy for OCD and anxiety, or EMDR therapy for trauma. You won’t be handed a one-size-fits-all approach; the modality follows what you actually need.

Frequently Asked
Questions
How do I know if I need individual therapy?
If something feels harder to manage on your own than it used to — anxiety, low mood, a difficult transition, relationship strain — that’s usually reason enough to talk to someone. You don’t need a crisis to start therapy.
What happens in a first therapy session at True North Psychotherapy?
Your first session focuses on understanding your background, current concerns, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions and get a feel for whether your therapist is a good fit.
How long does individual therapy typically last?
This depends entirely on you and what you’re working through. Some people find a shorter course of sessions helpful; others continue longer-term. Your therapist will build a plan with you and adjust it as you go.
Do you offer virtual individual therapy sessions?
Yes. Individual therapy is available virtually to clients anywhere in Ontario, in addition to in-person sessions at our Guelph offices located at 20 Douglas St and 115 Woolwich St.
